At St Joseph’s, preparing for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion and Reconciliation is one of the most special and joyful moments in our children’s faith journey. It is a time when our pupils grow closer to Jesus, deepen their understanding of the Mass, and learn what it truly means to live out the Gospel every day.

Our preparation is rooted in the teachings of the Church, the example of St Joseph, and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, which guide the way we live, pray, and act as a school family.

Growing in Faith and Understanding

First Holy Communion is a beautiful step in a child’s relationship with God. Through the Eucharist, children learn that Jesus is always present with them — in prayer, in their families, and in the community around them.

Throughout the programme, children explore:

  • The meaning and importance of the Mass

  • The Last Supper and Jesus’ gift of Himself

  • Forgiveness, reconciliation, and starting anew

  • How receiving Communion calls us to love and serve others

This journey is shared by the school, parish, and families working together, reflecting the Catholic Social Teaching principle of Community and Participation — reminding us that faith grows best when shared.

Catholic Social Teaching in Our Communion Programme

We weave Catholic Social Teaching into every part of our preparation, helping children see that receiving Jesus in the Eucharist is not only a moment of personal faith but a call to action.

The Dignity of the Human Person

Children learn that every person is precious and loved by God. As they prepare to receive Jesus, they reflect on how they can show kindness, respect, and compassion in everyday life.

The Common Good

We teach that Communion connects us not just to God but to one another. Pupils think about how their actions contribute to a happier, fairer, and more caring school and community.

Solidarity

Preparing for Communion encourages children to stand with others — especially those who might be lonely, worried, or facing hardship. They come to understand that we are one family in Christ.

Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

Inspired by Jesus’ example, children take part in age‑appropriate acts of charity and service. They learn that receiving the Eucharist strengthens them to help those most in need.

Working Together: School, Parish, and Families

The partnership between St Joseph’s School, St Joseph’s Parish, and our families is central to the children’s preparation. Together we provide:

  • Joint liturgies and prayer times

  • Parent meetings and guidance

  • Class lessons linked to the parish programme

  • Opportunities to explore Scripture and Catholic values in daily school life

This shared approach reflects the Catholic Social Teaching principle of Subsidiarity and Participation — each part of our community plays an important role in helping the children grow.
